Alors que les câbles Thunderbolt 3 passifs plus longs ne peuvent prendre en charge que des taux de transfert de données allant jusqu'à 20 Gbps, ce câble passif de 0,7 m peut atteindre les 40 Gbps grâce à sa courte longueur. En n'ayant pas besoin d'utiliser un chipset supplémentaire à l'intérieur des fiches comme les câbles Thunderbolt actifs, le câble de 0,7 m présente le faible prix d'un câble passif tout en étant aussi performant qu'un câble actif. Le câble de 0,7 m tire pleinement parti de la dernière technologie Thunderbolt en prenant en charge une grande variété de protocoles : Thunderbolt, USB (USB 3.1 Gen 1/USB 3.0, 2.0, 1.1), DisplayPort 1.2 (DP Altmode), PCI Express 3.0 (PCIe) ainsi que le transfert de données 10G Ethernet (des adaptateurs supplémentaires peuvent être nécessaires). En outre, il est capable d'alimenter des appareils jusqu'à 60 W (3 A 20 V).
Les câbles Thunderbolt 3 LMP (passifs) prennent en charge le double protocole pour le mode Thunderbolt (PCIe et DP) et peuvent donc être utilisés pour la connexion de périphériques en chaîne.

Les câbles Thunderbolt 3 actifs ne transfèrent pas le protocole USB-C Gen 2 (10G) en raison du CI. Si vous souhaitez utiliser un câble Thunderbolt pour faire fonctionner ce M.2, vous devez utiliser des câbles Thunderbolt 3 passifs (par exemple P/N 16598, 16599, 19015). Ces derniers auront un taux de transfert d'environ 950 Mo/s, profitant de la bande passante de 10G de l'USB-C.
